Description

Iconographic Technical Installation

The work is a video installation composed of old television and radio cabinets of different sizes and shapes displayed in their usual position, on their side or back, in which 11 colour CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors are inserted. Some cabinets are attached to one another and supported by a wooden horse. The installation is topped with a felt hat.

The television sets transmit images from the same colour video source, which is a looped montage presenting, among others, images of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police carousel or of Canadian flags. These images, produced by a laserdisc player, are perceived through Plexiglas or glass plates, as well as fabric and metallic grids placed in front of the cabinet openings.

Images on the television sets are produced by a laserdisc player.

The video signal is at first transformed by an RF modulator and is then passed onto the RF video amplifier distributors to enter in the VHF 75 Q outlet or the TV external antenna outlet (EXT. ANT.).

1- Ideally, calibrate the television sets before installation.

2- Clean the television screens, as required.

3- Place the base of the sculpture (sculptural element 1990.30a) and insert the television set TV11 in it.

4- Install the remaining sculptural elements according to the installation instructions.

5- Plug in the power bars.

6- Plug the laserdisc player into the RF modulator and into the corresponding power bars. The player must be placed in the sculptural element 1990.30a.

7- Plug in the RF modulator into the RF video amplifier distributor (D1).

8- Plug in the four RF video amplifier distributors, and then, into the corresponding power bars.

9- Insert, in order, the remaining television sets into the other corresponding sculptural elements and plug them in according to the installation instructions. All the TV sets should be turned on and the TV3-4-9-10 must be switched to VHF, VHF-LOW and TV mode.

10- Gather the fan electric cables using the connection caps (there is no polarity). Plug them into the power bar.

11- Install a timer.

12- Start up the installation.

13- Insert the laserdisc into the laserdisc player.

14- Switch on the TV11 using the remote control.

Dismantling:

Follow the same procedure but in reverse. The black plates under the elements 1990.30c and 1990.30d should stay screwed onto the sculptural elements in order to facilitate the next installation.

Undo only the electric cables of the fan inserted in the sculptural element 1990.30d and leave the brown electric cable in the sculptural element 1990.30c during packing.
