Degeneration   (French Equivalent: Dégénérescence)

DefinitionAn effect produced through a chain process of repetitive reproduction using a copying machine, which leads to a progressive deterioration of the original image. Simultaneous with the process of degeneration is the automatic enlargement of the image, which then extends beyond its original framework. A total metamorphosis of the image can thus be reached, such as an abstract structure made up of points, spots and lines. The intensity of degeneration varies depending on the models of copying machines used. The older are the models (e.g. analogical), the easier it is to obtain the effect. Degeneration is a plastic effect that was very popular in the early days of copy art. It constituted a distinctive trait of that art form, representative of the "détournement" of the reproductive function of the tool.
