Observer: Tanis Keiner

“Freely traversing borders and genres, David Ogborn is a composer, guitarist and performer of electronic sound and video. At the centre of his work is the combination of traditional performance arts with electronic elements — whether these be recordings of diverse outdoor environments around the world, improvisations on a laptop or altered guitar, video projections influenced by live musical gestures, or massive synthesized sounds on immersive arrays of loudspeakers.” (Source: Neutral Ground's website)

Emergence brings together Ogborn, on electric guitar and laptop, and a singing robot named CESARE to perform the lyrics of Toronto writers Wendy Banks, Leanna Brodie, Anna Chatterton and Lisa Codrington. Emergence is currently on tour in Hamiliton, Brantford, Toronto, Regina and the Internet, through support of the Canadian Music Centre's New Music In New Places program. This new multimedia music series can be viewed live via Internet streaming (see link below).

David Ogborn is a composer, guitarist and performer of electronic sound and video. His practice involves the digital manipulation of traditional performance arts with that of sound (commonly recordings of outdoor soundscapes, guitar, or laptop improvisations) and video projections influenced by live musical gestures.

Ogborn immigrated to Canada from South Australia as a child. He began his musical training as a jazz guitarist in Winnipeg. His musical mentors include Michael Matthews, Yves Daoust, Christos Hatzis and Luigi Nono. In 2006 he was awarded a doctorate from the University of Toronto. The artist's work has been performed throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. His sound installation Dream House was presented at the Canadian Museum Centre's Chalmers House during Toronto's Nuit Blanche in 2006 and his live electronic music for Fritz Lang's silent film Metropolis at the Esprit Orchestra's 2007 New Wave Festival.
