The key objective of the Digital Curation Manual – created and hosted by The University of Edinburgh’s Digital Curation Centre (DCC) – is to maintain a world-class community-driven resource composed of reports based on a wide range of digital curation issues. Since 2005, this online tool has provided access to best practices for the creation, management and preservation of digital information.

Written by pre-eminent scholars in the field of digital curation, the 45 current installments introduce a subject, explain the specific terminology used, suggest best practices and illustrate real-life examples. To ensure reputable results, these installments are reviewed by an international panel of experts and edited by Michael Day, DCC Research Officer and Seamus Ross, DCC Associate Director of Services prior to being published. Existing installments include topics related to: ontologies, archival processes, documentation and preservation strategies, metadata, interoperability, etc. Furthermore, authors are required to revise their installments on an annual basis to guarantee up-to-date and relevant information on their subjects.

The Digital Curation Manual benefits digital curation professionals by making them aware of the challenges and responsibilities involved in creating, managing and preserving their collections of digital information over time. The Digital Curation Centre continues to accept proposals in new areas of research for future installments.
