In January 2007, the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive present New Media & Social Memory, a public symposium to discuss strategies for preserving digital art at a time when digital technologies are evolving and becoming obsolete at an astonishingly rapid pace. While focussing on digital art, the symposium also addressed larger concerns about the long-term conservation of our increasingly digital culture, including how we decide what digital content - from Web sites to video games - are worth saving. Featured talks included: - Richard Rinehart, Digital Media Director and Curator (UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive) - Jane Metcalf, Wired Magazine - Stewart Brand, Long Now Foundation - Jon Ippolito - Marisa Olsen, Rhizome.org On the site, you can also find project documents and papers from the symposium, including: - A System of Formal Notation for Scoring Works of Digital and Variable Media Art - Appendices to A System of Formal Notation for Scoring Works of Digital and Variable Media Art - Archiving the Avant Garde: Project Description - Renewing The Erl King - Permanence Through Change: The Variable Media Approach - The Straw that Broke the Museum's Back: Documenting and Preserving Digital Art for the Next Century - Preserving the Rhizome ArtBase - Avoiding Technological Quicksand: Finding a Viable Technical Foundation for Digital Preservation | |
